A likely topic of discussion at healthcare events this year will be the use of technology – and recently telecoms giant BT teamed up with NHS healthcare services in a new trial.

The partnership trial is with NHS Wakefield District and patients with chronic heart failure can use home broadband to send their health data to experts, who then remotely monitor their condition.

BT is providing and managing the telehealth kit used, and the aim of the trial is to reduce the number of hospital visits heart patients have to make.

In addition the system allows nurses to monitor early warning signs more easily, and proactively respond to a patient’s needs.

The trial will run until 2011 when NHS Wakefield will then decide whether to adopt the system permanently.
